William Henry (Harry) Barrett of Port Dover was surprised to find his name in a Star classified ad in 1926. Solicitors from Great Britain were searching for him regarding an estate in Ireland. Harry had inherited a large Irish castle in the Clonmel district … and thus began an incredible adventure that continues today in the port of Dover. With part of the proceeds from the sale of his assets in Ireland, Harry hired local artisans and tradesmen to build Clonmel Castle on a hill overlooking the original location of Dover, Ontario; a site that had played a part in the War of 1812 that saw the burning of Nichol’s Mill and Brewery. Clonmel Castle opened with great fanfare in 1929.
Under the loving guidance of Lynneee Steffler, Clonmel has recently experienced a complete restoration and has now been returned to the original glory of 1929.
